22 Therefore, IT WAS ALSO COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
23 Now not for his sake only was it written THAT IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM
25 but for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those who believe upon Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. Romans 4:22-23
It Was Written for You, Too
Telling someone’s story means capturing their life, experiences, and character so others can read, learn, and grow. History teaches us wisdom from the lives of those who came before us.
The Bible, however, is more than just a historical account. It contains countless stories of people and God—some who believed in Him, some who didn’t. To those who don’t believe, it might seem like just another storybook or collection of ancient records. But to those who do believe, it’s the Word of God, a divine record of His communication with humanity—showing the consequences of sin and eternal separation from God for those who reject Him, and the gift of eternal life for those who believe.
God Speaks in Many Ways
Throughout history, God has revealed Himself in many ways:
To Moses through a burning bush.
On Mount Sinai, through thunder and lightning.
To Elijah in a still, small voice.
Even through a donkey, as in Numbers 22.
As Hebrews 1:2 says: “But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
But in these last days, God has spoken through His Son, Jesus Christ. Christ is the final and complete Word of God. Everything humanity needs to know has been perfectly revealed in Him. Today, we have the inerrant, infallible, and all-sufficient written record—the 66 books of Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Faith Counts as Righteousness
back to Romans 4:24:
“but for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those who believe upon Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,”
Paul emphasizes that this wasn’t written just for Abraham—that he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness—but it was also written for us
“Therefore, it was also counted to him as righteousness. Now not for his sake only was it written that it was counted to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over on account of our transgressions, and was raised on account of our justification.”
The story of Abraham was written so we too can believe in God through faith in Jesus Christ, and be counted righteous—not as sinners relying on ourselves, but as those made right with God.
Verses 24–25
“But for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead; He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.”
Faith to him that he delivered over because of our transgressions and raised because of our justification, we were justified before God through his resurrection
He made Him who knew no sin (Jesus christ )to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
(2 Corinthians 5:21“so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” righteous” = to be upright, just, blameless, in line with God’s standards.
But since no human is perfectly sinless (Romans 3:10, 23, 24, 25 ), righteousness before God is by faith, not by work
We believe in the God who raised Jesus from the dead for our justification.
We believe in the One who died for our sins. The Scriptures are a living testimony, pointing us to God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as our Savior.
The Gospel: Power and Wisdom
Paul “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).To the world, this message might seem foolish, but it’s God’s wisdom and power to save. And how can people believe unless the gospel is shared?
The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit works through the written Word and preaching. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Through this Word, God:
Opens blind eyes, Softens hardened hearts, Brings people into living faith, and Life Transformed by FaithWhen Christ enters our lives through faith, everything changes: We no longer stand condemned; we stand justified. We no longer walk as enemies of God; we walk as His children. We no longer cling to our own righteousness; we rest in His righteousness.
This is the hope of Abraham, and it’s our hope today. By faith in Christ, we’re counted righteous, reconciled with God, and empowered to live in the joy of His salvation.
